چکیده

Jointly owned by the University of Oklahoma (OU) and Oklahoma State University (OSU), the Oklahoma Mesonet has provided valuable meteorological measurements since the early 1990’s. With over 110 stations located across the state of Oklahoma, the Mesonet is a state-ofthe-art network that measures several hydrological, agricultural, and meteorological variables (Brock et al. 1995; McPherson et al. 2006).

Estimating profile soil moisture and groundwater variations using GRACE and Oklahoma Mesonet soil moisture data

[1] In this study we estimate a time series of regional groundwater anomalies by combining terrestrial water storage estimates from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission with in situ soil moisture observations from the Oklahoma Mesonet. Using supplementary data from the Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (DOE ARM) network, we develop an empi...

Assessing agricultural drought in summer over Oklahoma Mesonet sites using the water-related vegetation index from MODIS.

Agricultural drought, a common phenomenon in most parts of the world, is one of the most challenging natural hazards to monitor effectively. Land surface water index (LSWI), calculated as a normalized ratio between near infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR), is sensitive to vegetation and soil water content. This study examined the potential of a LSWI-based, drought-monitoring algorithm...

Impact of CASA Radar and Oklahoma Mesonet Data Assimilation on the Analysis and Prediction of Tornadic Mesovortices in an MCS

The impact of radar and Oklahoma Mesonet data assimilation on the prediction of mesovortices in a tornadic mesoscale convective system (MCS) is examined. The radar data come from the operational Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) and the Engineering Research Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere’s (CASA) IP-1 radar network. The Advanced Regional Prediction S...

Evaluation of MODIS NDVI and NDWI for vegetation droughtmonitoring using Oklahoma Mesonet soil moisture data

[1] The evaluation of the relationship between satellitederived vegetation indices (normalized difference vegetation index and normalized difference water index) and soil moisture improves our understanding of how these indices respond to soil moisture fluctuations. Soil moisture deficits are ultimately tied to drought stress on plants. The diverse terrain and climate of Oklahoma, the extensive...

Polarimetric Radar Rain Estimation through Retrieval of Drop Size Distribution Using a Bayesian Approach

This study proposes a Bayesian approach to retrieve raindrop size distributions (DSDs) and to estimate rainfall rates from radar reflectivity in horizontal polarization ZH and differential reflectivity ZDR. With this approach, the authors apply a constrained-gamma model with an updated constraining relation to retrieve DSD parameters. Long-term DSD measurements made in central Oklahoma by the t...
